Update- the unit stopped working again on 5/1/09- same problem stuck thermostat- technician installed installed a one way valve between the heater and the Chlorinator cell citing backflow of highly chlorinated PH+ water into the thermostat. 100.00 dollar repair for parts and labor. Problem I have with this theory is that the cell was on the far side of a purposefully designed u turn to avoid this from the start- well see. Purchased this along with several other components during a pool replaster & remodel the Spring of 08 This was bought along with a slew of new components that I will start reviewing - a new jandy RS 8 Automation system, solar panels, pentair quad de 60 filter, goldline chlorinator. A capacitor in the Pentair Mastertemp pool heater blower motor failed after two years of intermittent service requiring an entire new blower assembly to be purchased for $500. Both motors made in China....cheap junk! Both items beyond warranty. Stay away from Pentair pool products. This heater is great. Compact design, quiet, and super efficient. Ridiculously easy to operate and it looks great. Works well with my Pentair IntelliFlo pump. Make sure you are running the pump at at least 35 GPMs when you are heating. Had a bit of a cold spell here in Los Angeles last week. Pool temp went from 85 (where we like it) to 73 within a week of non-use. Fired up the heater and my 15k gallon pool/spa combo was back up to 85 within two hours. I am very happy with this heater and Pentair products overall. Buy with confidence as it has a 2 year warranty. I first noticed the acrid smell, then some strange noises and moved to investigate only to find my pool heater burning with smoke. I could hear crackling burning sounds emanating from the unit casing. I immediately shut the unit down. The manufacturer made no effort to replace my heater or cover any of my costs. In fact two letters delivered by post produced no response. I read in the unit paperwork the warranty is not transferable. I took the time to deliver the burned motor with burned black windings which probably was the source of the fire to the manufacturer and failed to receive a response or acknowledgement of the device. The real tragedy here is the failure of manufacturer to stand by a product that could have resulted in a very serious gas fire. I have a salt-water pool and it was actually the wrong type of system, but it lasted for three years under the harsh salt-water conditions. This new model is made properly for my type of pool. It was amazingly easy to install - hook up the electric, gas and water, turn everything on and it worked. You have to turn it on and off several times to bleed the air out of the gas line, but the directions warn you of that. As soon as it was getting gas, it fired up and stayed that way. If you leave this on too long and it runs too much, it goes into "service" mode. But that is easily fixed - turn it off and back on and it works just fine. It also came with a bag of parts, including gaskets for the water, which was nice. I didn't need them, but the ones I have will wear out sooner or later and now I have replacements. Even though I purchased mine through another online pool store, I wanted to give my experience on this pool heater. I buy all my big ticket items through Amazon because of the wonderful CS, no tax, free and fast shipping that Amazon offers. The only reason I didn't buy my Sta-Rite SR400NA Max-E-Therm Black LP Gas Pool Heater, 333K BTU is the simple fact that Amazon did not sell it at the time. This is a BEAST of a pool heater. I have a 30,000 gallon in ground pool and researched pool heaters for weeks. This unit well heat my pool fast. I use propane or LP and was advised to buy the 333K, BTU model. I have owned it for about 3 years and have not had one problem. I have a salt water generator that is harsh to metal. Sta-Rite is made up of a Fiberglas and poly mixture to prevent rust on the housing of the unit. The unit looks like a giant egg and it is easily opened, unlike the box type...
